Data Protection - Are You Cavalier?

KYD Evolution's Blog - Data Protection

Flouting the Law
Have you read the Data Protection Act 1998 recently? You know if you carry out business in the UK you really should. Did you know that not to fall foul of the Data Protection Act you should amongst other things be aware of the following?:

·         Encrypt any personal information held electronically that would cause damage or distress if it were lost or stolen.
·         Consider whether the content of emails should be encrypted or password protected.
·         If you send a sensitive email from a secure server to an insecure recipient, security will be threatened. You may need to check that the recipients arrangements are secure enough before sending your message.

If you currently do none of these things then you are flouting the law and are acting rather cavalier with the data you hold. Continuing to do business in this way could lead to you becoming the next newspaper headline. Apart from the direct financial implications this could have, consider the in-direct cost and loss of reputation.

Getting Legal
As a responsible business you will need to deploy some encryption software. In fact its far stronger than that! If you want to be legal you will need to deploy some encryption software. Now before you throw your hands up in the air and shout but what about the expense and do you know how complicated that would be, think again. Modern email and file encryption software has come a long way in the past three or four years. The act of becoming legal in this regard should result in virtually no change to your existing processes.

First Things First
Before you rush out and grab the first product that offers you low cost easy encryption, take stock of the complete landscape. Do you need to protect data at rest, on mobile devices as well as when contained in an email? The chances are that you do. This will narrow the field considerably. One prime contender will be Egress Switch. I have had first hand experience of this product and found that it ticked all of my boxes.

Things To Look For
When selecting your solution there are a number of major ticks you want in the box;

·         Independent certification of the something like FIPS or CAPS approval
·         Simple one or two click operation
·         Integration with existing architecture, spam, virus and content filters
·         Allows free use by non subscribed recipient
·         Ability to access secure data anywhere on iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android.
·         Ability to encrypt files on hard drives, thumb drives and CD-ROMs
·         Ability to set enterprise wide policy regarding what is to be encrypted when leaving the network
·         Audit trail of what has been sent and received

Comfortably Numb

When you have found the right product for you and successfully deployed it you will have that warm comfortably numb sensation of being legal at last. Doing nothing about complying with the Data Protection Act is not an option. Securing your data should be a no brainer!

BlackBerry Q5 review

BlackBerry’s Q5 is the first mid-priced phone from the company using the new BB10 operating system. It’s a return to what’s become the company’s core market – affordable, rugged and with a keyboard.
Indeed, anyone familiar with BlackBerry’s usual work will probably be impressed with the Q5 initially – build quality is clearly much improved, at least in the test units sent to journalists, and the device, even though it’s all plastic, is a decent size that still isn’t too big. It doesn’t feel as premium as the more expensive Q10, with its Kevlar-like back, but this is a slightly cheaper device, starting at around £25 per month.

With the screen shrunk to 3.1” to make room for the physical keyboard, it won’t drain the battery in the same way that proves a problem for full touchscreen devices. The problems, however, are more in strategy than in execution: if you believe there’s an army of cost-conscious BlackBerry users who are wedded to the platform and waiting for the new OS, then the Q5 is the device that will save the company. If you believe, alternatively, that most BB users are either business people who have already moved on or for who cost isn’t the overrirding issue, then the Q5 seems to rather miss the point. The more premium Q10, it seems, has sold moderately well, but failed to stem the decline.

The Q5 does, at least, feature all the excellent points of the BB10 OS – combined inboxes for LinkedIn, Twitter, email, Facebook and more, plus the ‘Peek and Flow’ idea that makes everything easy to find and the ‘Balance’ system that lets users switch easily between work and personal modes. But if these are your priorities, the Q10, for only slightly more money when it’s being discounted, seems to be a better bet. And the Q5 doesn’t feature the removable battery that so many BlackBerry fans adore. You’ll need to keep this one charged up, and I wouldn’t advise risking that for more than 10 hours.
So the Q5 suffers from all the compromises inherent in a mid-range device – a 5MP camera that is adequate rather than brilliant and a 1.2GHz processor, for instance, and also from the problems BlackBerry is currently suffering. So there are limited apps, and the BBM messaging system will soon be available elsewhere, where previously it was unique to BlackBerry.

If you’re determined to buy a BlackBerry, with a keyboard, but don’t want to break the bank for a Q10, buy a Q5. But if you’re simply after a phone for a reasonable price, hunt around and you can easily find a Samsung Galaxy S3 or an iPhone 4S for prices that aren’t too dissimilar.

WhatsApp now Free on iOS Devices

After offering its services to Android devices completely free of cost, messaging service WhatsApp has now been rolled out as a free app for iOS devices as well.
The application used to initially set back iOS users by about $0.99 on download but users can now avail it services for free for the first one year, post which the brand will start charging its users around 65p ($1) per year.
The same condition reportedly applied even for the Android devices but its renewal was automatic and very few users are said to have paid for it.

Along with making the app free for iOS devices, Whatsapp has also brought along some updates that includes the ability to share multiple photos and back up chats on iCloud. The company will also introduce some more features like push-to-talk which will be soon released.
Apple listed the application as the 6th most popular paid application, which also added to the revenue of the App Store as it was the most downloaded messaging app, reported CNet. .
The messaging app has evidently made it easier for people to text and apps like WhatsApp and Viber have completely taken over text messaging.
WhatsApp faced competition with the upcoming messaging applications but none could take its place. It has been a very popular mobile messaging application since its inception in 2009 and currently boasts of over 250 million monthly active users with around 27 billion messages exchanged each day, leaving even the most popular micro blogging site Twitter behind. It raised about $8 million from blue-chip venture capital firm Sequoia Capital and from firms in 2011.
Whatsapp is also known to be one of the messaging applications, which doesn't make revenues by serving ads to users. "We do have a manifesto opposing advertising. We're proud of that. Who likes advertising," Jan Koum CEO of Whatsapp told Forbes.
The messaging application now has a new competitor, WeChat, which has roped on footballer Lionel Messi as its brand ambassador.

BlackBerry A10 Specs Reportedly Leaked

KYD Evolution: Blackberry A10 Specs

So far, we've only had furtive glances of the rumored BlackBerry A10 through basic specs and a short video. However, CrackBerry forum member nereuszeer may have given us much more insight by posting what appears to be a presentation slide with most of the A10's details. If accurate, they suggest that the 5-inch, 720p OLED screen wouldn't be the only standout feature -- there's also a much larger 2,800mAh battery and a slightly faster 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro. The phone wouldn't otherwise represent a big break from the Z10, although the leak hints at both a preloaded instance of BlackBerry 10.2 and a thicker Verizon variant. When the slide reportedly dates back to May, there's a chance the hardware could change before release. Still, don't be surprised if this ultimately represents BlackBerry's fall flagship.

NIIT NIGERIA Scholarship - Is This A Scam Or What?

NIIT NIGERIA, one of the leading and foremost global talent development corporation as they call it have surprised me with what i have heard and what they are supposedly doing.

Currently, NIIT Nigeria is undergoing a scholarship test which applicants can apply for at their website http://www.niitnigeria.com.

Last date of Application - 12th July 2013
Exam Date - 13th July 2013

My problem with this is the fact that after doing the exam and passing it, applicants are required to still pay the fees for the desired programme they would like to enroll for...

QUESTION IS?

What the hell is a scholarship if successful participants still have to pay a huge price for any programme they would like to enrol for?

A reliable source and fellow blogger, +Abdulazeez Temidire Olajide at http://www.temisoftinc.wordpress.com along with a couple of other people that had done this so called scholarship test in the pasts have also confirmed this...

I see this as scam and a means of drawing people to them just to rip them in the end... It is not stated anywhere in the site that despite this scholarship, participants still have to pay!

Where are we going in Nigeria????

Encryption : My Journey With TrueCrypt

KYD Evolution: Encryption

Like every other human being there are definitely going to be some files you would like to protect from prying eyes or the general access without you giving the permission for it to be accessed. This was the case with my Western Digital "WD" 500gb External hard drive.

This hard drive of mine was full to the brim and contained lots of games and software. It was more than just a backup of my system as it had files and scripts i could not keep on the system as it was also  full... I have just 250gb hard drive on my HP Compaq Presario Cq56 laptop....

To cut the long story short... I had decided to encrypt the 500gb external hard drive using Truecrypt just to protect my important files.

Using TrueCrypt, you are presented with different methods or kinds of encryption.. your choice to make... you could choose to just select a chunk of the drive and encrypt. Doing this you can now copy your important files into the encrypted chunk or you could just encrypt the whole drive and require a password before any file can be accessed on it.

I downloaded the TrueCrypt encryption software from their website www.truecrypt.org and started the full encryption of my 500gb hard drive...

5 hours into encryption and i was already frustrated... The damn thing was just in 7%... i began having a change of mind, but i couldnt stop anymore, not when i had started... about 20 hours later, the encryption was done... And i felt relieved...

Anytime i insert the hard drive into a system it pops up a dialog that the drive is not formatted and asks you to format.. To access the files in the drive, you just close that dialog, run your truecrypt and unlock the drive. Remembering to always lock unmount it before ejecting.

I started using the encrypted hard drive with my other flash drive as the key to the hard drive. Things were going smoothly for a while until a friend who knew nothing about the encrypted drive picked it up and tried to connect it to his system. The format dialog box appeared as usual and he clicked format.... At this moment i walked in but it was already too late..

The filesystem was damaged.

And that spelt the end of my hard drive... i started searching for solutions online to repair the file system and also try to at least recover some of my files..

I went as far as trying testdisk all to no avail....

After a while and series of experiments, my hard drive was no longer detected by my system and that was the end... Thank you truecrypt...

Moral of the story, be careful when enjoying yourself and most importantly... DONT ENCRYPT BLINDLY!!! just like i did....
